Per the anecdote, I didn't realize Hope was a smoker. I had heard that she never smoked. Anyone know?

I scrolled through the previous listings here, and I didn't see the following tidbit posted. If it WAS, sorry for the duplication.

Source: Barbed Wire Kisses: The Jesus and Mary Chain Story by Zoe Howe.

Passages on Hope Sandoval as found through Google Books:

Jim apparently was annoyed with William having Hope on the American tour because William and Hope would wander off together and couldn't be found.

During the time JAMC were making Stoned and Dethroned: William's and Jim's lives were taking a nosedive. According to Jim: "'My personal life was starting to slide, broken relationships and stuff like that, likewise with William. He got it on with Hope [Sandoval, Mazzy Star's lead singer] during that record, but he was still going out with Rona. That got messy, as it would.' William himself would later explain in an interview with musician and friend Dimitri Coats that while he had fallen in love with Hope, it 'was the unhappiest time in my life. It was horrible, horrible, horrible.'"

Sidenote: William had been with Rona for nine years. Jim, apparently, would get irritated by Hope's presence.

alas:
Just saw your comment today as I've been out of town and mostly away from net activities for a month+. Thanks for posting quotes from your find re. JAMC & Hope with details I didn't know before such as that William already had a steady gf when he was involved with Hope. I recall someone some years back posted at now defunct mazzystar.nu fan site just the quote from the William Reid interview you cite where William said he was in love with Hope but it was the unhappiest time of his life. Thanks for the added info.

I'm afraid I can't really answer your question as I don't know much about Hope's personal life, let alone her attitude towards smoking. However, I remember reading an old Mazzy Star concert review (published in the 90s) that included an anecdote similar to the one in the Chicago review. The journalist reported that Hope asked for cigarettes during the show and was offered a joint by someone in the audience. According to the journalist, she declined the offer, replying something like "No, not that kind of cigarette".

There's also a reference to David and Hope smoking in one of the articles posted by Hermesacat in the Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions Interviews thread:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4726 ... alone.html
A former employee of Opal's label, British independent Rough Trade, recalls them coming over to London in 1989, to play one of their final shows before Opal mutated into Mazzy Star. 'Hope and David sat in the Rough Trade office all day long, smoking and silent."

Besides these two references, I came across this "unexpected" comment on YT:
"Might surprise all of you to know that Hope S may look like an angel. But she smokes like a chimney, likes a drink or two (lol) and swears like a trooper. I adore her."

I don't know if this comment should be taken seriously as anyone can write anything on the internet. (I must say that this description doesn't exactly match the way I imagine Hope :D !)
Perhaps you can contact the poster through his YT account to determine if he was just joking or if he really knows Hope. His YT nickname is Keith Bate and his comment was posted one year ago. It appears on the first page of the California video on YT.

Hope was notorious for requesting/drinking wine during her interviews in the '90s, and the swearing thing is pretty notorious also from her infamous meltdown at the Boston show during the 2001 Warm Inventions tour...good times :D

Re. Hope & smoking: I'm not sure why anyone should be too surprised she's been a smoker (as Emma posts some more evidence of). After all, the rock n roll world's never been known to be a realm of clean & healthy living (hello JAMC)! And as Zarik mentions, we know she likes wine too, so is not vice-free. I just hope Hope's given up the tobacco habit by now though, as it's a good habit to quit before it does permanent damage.
Here's a scary stat I read: Smoking reportedly kills approx. half its long-term users via COPD, cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc.... So Hope, if by chance you're still smoking, please do quit soon, as we wish you to have a very long & healthy life & career!

Here is a picture of Mazzy Star's bootleg album, The Other Side.
The original poster got this CD as a birthday present from David Roback himself.
Check out the note that David Roback wrote for his friend on the leaflet:

"Original bootleg hour being bootlegged by original owner" ;)

Emma: Nice collectors item, the "The Other Side" CD. Did you see it up for auction somewhere? Or did someone post it as online as an interesting "conversation piece"? Btw I think the word that looks like "hour" I'll guess says "now," instead.

HOPE'S X-RATED VIDEO, "PARADISE CIRCUS"! (post updated Oct. 21, 2024)
(no, it's not quite what you may be thinking).
It's the official video of the song Paradise Circus by Massive Attack with Hope guest-singing on it.

The uncensored video is viewable at Vimeo, here: https://vimeo.com/10405177

Mention of this video is findable already in the HS&TWI Interviews thread, but I thought
it deserves a more detailed, prominent post. It's a video the band Massive Attack released
in Dec., 2009, an official video of their and Hope's song "Paradise Circus," released as a single around
the same time, a song collaboration with Hope as she wrote the lyrics & melody, and sang it. The song was also included on Massive Attack's Feb. 2010 album release, "Heligoland."

Five or six years ago, fans visiting go-to fan site of the time, Mazzy Star Boulevard (now defunct), knew about the video as it was discussed there. And music sites publicized it. But since many people may have missed it, it deserves a new post.

It's no doubt one of the more unusual aspects of Hope's career. It's an official video
of her/Massive Attack's song, an interesting, though XXX-rated, documentary which
means it's banned from you tube, Facebook, and other sites that forbid nudity or porn.
It's not a conventional music video. Instead, it's
a short documentary film that uses the song "Paradise Circus" as its soundtrack/theme song.
It's a documentary of an interview with retired porn star Georgina Spelvin, now a senior,
and includes hard core clips from her 1973 "porn classic" "The Devil in Miss Jones."
The opening credits say it's presented by "Heligoland Pictures," which links
it directly to the band Massive Attack. Director Toby Dye was enlisted to create the video as a promotional video for Massive Attack's Heligoland album.

The XXX-rated video of "Paradise Circus" used to be viewable at Massive Attack's official
site, but last I checked is no longer up there. But I did notice today, the band's FB page
has a couple of posts with links to a Vimeo upload of the video, viewable here:
https://vimeo.com/71961703

There is an interview with Hope (2010, JUNE 21, THE BRAG mag) findable in the 2009-2010 interviews thread at this fan site where she comments about the Paradise Circus video. In it, she endorses the video, says she likes it, and says she needed to formally approve it to be released. Here's the relevant excerpt , QUOTE:

"Has Sandoval seen it? 'I have,'she answers, 'I had to approve it before they put it out.' What were her thoughts? 'I'm just hoping that my father doesn't see it,' she laughs nervously, 'or any of my brothers and sisters! One of my brothers has seen it- he did say it's racy, but it's really good. That's why I approved it; it's pretty wild, but I thought it was really good.'" (-HOPE)

Discogs site shows Hope received a co-writing credit on the released recording (along with 4 other people),but the song already existed in complete form with the same lyrics & same vocal melody before Hope ever got involved. So, the band must have given Hope the credit as a reward for her recording her vocals on it though she didn't actually co-write it.

The song's original, unreleased complete-song demo existed before Hope was involved. It had the working title "Harpsichord" with Yolanda Quartey on vocals.Yolanda also sang the song live with Massive Attack on their 2008 tour when the band showcased a number of then unreleased songs.

It's apparently not uncommon in the music business for people not involved in the actual writing of a song to be given co-writing credit on it as a reward (with royalties) for their involvement in some other aspect of the project, in Hope's case contributing vocals.

EXCELLENT IN-DEPTH INFO on the history of the song PARADISE CIRCUS from a Massive Attack fan site:

Here are some other massages on Hope from the JAMC story book which alas mentioned before:

On November 27 the Mary Chain and Mazzy Star were booked to play the Roxy in Los Angeles, Hope’s home city. Jim says: “ The period after Stoned&Dethroned, that was when William and I started to not understand each other’s direction. He was going out with Hope and I didn’t hit it off with her. Maybe I was a bit hard on her. She could be a bit prima donna-ish, but a lot of it was naïve and innocent, although I didn’t see it at the time.
“I remember in LA, after the sound-check William was going back to Hope’s and I said, ‘ You’re not going to have time to go there and come back for the gig.’ He said, ’No, I’ll be all right.’ He rolled up about five minutes after show-time and I was pissed off , I screamed at them. Hope just kind of stamped her foot and marched out.”
“William just said, ‘Fuck you. I’m not going on stage until I’m drunk,’ ” Monti adds. “So we all had to sit there in the dressing-room watching him drink Jack Daniel’s while the clock ticked. Every now and then I dared to ask, ‘Are you drunk yet?’ Finally he was ready so we could do the gig.”
Seething, Jim marched on stage and growled into the microphone, “William’s had too much to drink.” Not to be outdone, William retorted, “And Jim’s a fucking prick.”
“They were the kings of stage banter,” says Lincoln Fong, who was watching it all unfold just feet away from him on stage. “Sometimes it was hard not to laugh when it kicked off. The show went well though.”
Looking back, Jim is philosophical, not to mention contrite. “I think I was the idiot there. I think back to what the Mary Chain was about—so what that he rolled up five minutes late? There was no harm done, I just wanted to make a point.
“There was a lot of things like that with Hope, and I don’t think she meant any harm, but it ruffled my feathers, and I would make stands over things that, as I look back on them, I don’t think were important. I probably should have cut her some slack.”
