General discussion about Mazzy Star

Re. the debate re. whether Mazzy Star is doing their own FB postings, etc, Emma may be right the band may have someone still helping them post to FB even though they're not touring & presumably would have time enough on their hands to do it all themselves if they wanted to.

Because now I see times shown when postings are made to FB seem to give a clue it might be an office person during office hours doing all or most of them. Of the last eleven postings, ten were made in a very narrow time window between 2p.m. & 3p.m.(North American Pacific Time) as if someone in an office devotes that section of a work day for it, assuming they may be in North America, & not posting at night in Europe. The one post that's out of that time window was the Dec. 22 new song video with the "seasons greetings" message posted around noon, I suspect Hope wrote. Maybe she posted that one on her own time.

In the early part of 2014, most FB posts were made in another narrow time window of approx. 10a.m to 11a.m., plus a few in the afternoon. The one post Hope put her name to re. Keith Mitchell's Monitor band L.P. is odd one out time-wise again, being the latest post of 2014, just after 4p.m.

I picture musicians, especially ones that travel between North American
& European time zones as Hope reportedly does, & maybe David less so, as not likely to keep such regimented hours for doing their FB postings! So maybe Emma's right about some management person likely doing most actual FB postings on the band's behalf.

But even if someone's helping them with their FB page, I still like to think the band likely
tells their helper what to post, & wouldn't let them freelance in messaging or other content. From what I gather about their personalities, I suspect Hope & David likely wouldn't want to relinquish that control!

Hi all,

It's been interesting to read Emma's and Hermesacat's responses to my sincere but barbed shot about whether Hope actually wrote some FB posts as they believe. I'm a skeptic (among other things) and had read a book titled 'Why People Believe Weird Things' by Michael Shermer years ago and happened to notice a book 'The Believing Brain' recently at the library and picked it up. I haven't finished it yet but will bring up a point the book makes and before E & H think just 'against' their beliefs also 'against' my own. This author claims that in many instances we have a belief and then look for or make up evidence to support that belief and ignore such that doesn't support it. Hermesacat acknowledged after Emma's response that many of the FB posts are likely written by management staff and even brought up evidence as to the timing of said posts supporting this. The posts about Monitor (the band Keith Mitchell is/was a member of) are extremely unlikely to have been written by anyone other than Hope and Keith and i acknowledge this. However the Christmas posting is not signed by anyone in particular and my brain has difficulty with Hope ever saying to us fans "Thank you for being so lovely" but i may be like that because i am filtering out evidence that goes against my view of Hope. Hermesacat talks about how there have been anecdotes from fans about how gracious Hope was when they met her but there have also been many that went the other way and certainly her and Colm's behaviour in Vancouver several years ago was anything but gracious. Madub (Madzub on the old Blvd) has posted that he talked with some of the band after the show in Vancouver and that they had trouble at the border and one of the members of Dirt Blue Gene had not been permitted entry and so that was why DBG had not performed as the opening act (Ora Cogan was brought in on late notice to substitute) and so that explained the poor attitude by Colm and Hope. I don't think that performers owe us a damn thing in the way of interviews, FaceBook posts etc but a concert ticket is of a different order. It's like a contract between performer and attendee and the performers in this case sure didn't live up to their end of it. SOME of the attendees were less than optimal but as i've posted before there are and were better ways of dealing with it. Neil Young recently was noted for sarcastically miming texting on stage to shame a couple of attendees at one of his shows and once they realized they were being mocked got up and left (at least their seats if not the show itself). So Neil found a way to punish the two miscreants with little to no 'collateral damage' to the rest of the audience. Most of us (and i include myself here BIG TIME) can find better ways to handle the adverse events in our life and indeed someone in a class i attend brought up the 90/10 rule by an author they like. 10% is what happens that we can't control and the other 90% is how we react and that is under our control. Emma and Hermesacat have pointed out evidence that the Christmas greeting probably was written by the band and not their management (citing the style and time stamp of the post) and so I'm going to post here that i now think that it is likely that the post was written by the band even though i still have trouble with the "Thank you for being so lovely". It just doesn't sound like Hope but people can change and we should give that some benefit of our doubt. I'm still ok with my bringing up the issue if not so much my level of sarcasm but in addition to being a skeptic i'm also sardonic, arcerbic, and downright cynical at times.

Blessed Be!
Mike

The music snippet is quite nice and i agree with Hermesacat that it is likely an excerpt from a longer piece and for me it is very seasonal and recalls to me the piano segment of Brian Eno's 'Music for Airports'.

It's good Mike's posted his provocative contrarian opinions re. Mazzy Star's FB page. It seems to have provoked us into looking more closely at the page & better figuring out what may likely be going on with that FB page, & who's involved with it. For that, I thank you, Mike!

-Btw, more evidence Mazzy Star's FB postings are mostly done by someone keeping office hours (instead of "musicians' hours") is, of the 28 FB postings done since the start of 2014, they're all Monday to Friday weekday ones except two: one recognizing Record Store Day ("Happy Record Store Day") Saturday April 19 when the band released the 7" of I'm Less Here/Things, which was kind of an obligatory Saturday post for R.S.D. Plus a Saturday, Dec. 27 posting of a photo which looks like a home photo of what could be Colm from behind as he holds up a camera & shoots his own photo of a landscape from a high window.

If it was sheer random chance, of 28 posts one would expect approx. 8 weekend ones, 4 Sundays & 4 Saturdays instead of just two, both Saturdays. What also seems to defy random chance is the postings are all done during (North American) office hours, & mostly in narrow time windows that repeat. Emma must be right a management helper keeping office hours is doing most FB postings on the band's behalf.(It's good this time of year I'm more likely to have idle time enough to devote to investigating such minutiae!)

Dec. 16, 2015:
Until today, Mazzy Star's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MazzyStarOfficial has been dormant for 11 months. The last official post there was way back in January, 2015 (it was a video of Cookie Monster singing "Fade Into You.")

Finally, a new FB post. I'm going to guess it may be Hope's post. It's a personal message accompanied by a photo, both reproduced below.

QUOTE: "Look what I got... Le Volume Courbe's new record. Just in time for a dark sparkling Christmas. Thank you lil sis...."

Image

-Mazzy Star's Hope, David, & Colm all played on Le Volume Courbe's prior album called "I Killed My Best Friend," 2005. They're friends with Le Volume Courbe's Charlotte Marionneau. There's a short article & a streamable song from this new 2015 album (the album's called "I Wish Dee Dee Ramone Was Here With Me"), here: http://pitchfork.com/news/61294-le-volu ... res-rusty/

Hopefully, this rare FB post from the band today may signal more activity upcoming. With luck, 2016 will even bring more new releases & live shows.

I'll refrain this year from resurrecting my usual seasonal Mazzy Star pun, i.e. "Have a very Mazzy Christmas, all, and a Hope-y New Year!"
Oh, too late, there it is again.

Thanks for sharing that update. I enjoyed what I have heard of Le Volume Courbe.

It's nice to see all of the detective thought put into this thread. (Btw, in looking at the FB cover photo below, it might be fair to deduce that Hope has been undergoing some form of martial arts training. In the background we see someone who is probably a sensei or wizard and three variations representing important colors of the chakra system (three is also an important number in Freemaonry). With all of the people crossing into other forms of entertainment, like movies, Rhonda Rousey being just one example, it is possible she is preparing for a role in an action move. Can anyone confirm whether she is a member of Scientology/the Illuminati?) :)

I've been streaming the new Le Volume Courbe album via Deezer the last few days, & have gotten to like it a lot, liking Charlotte's voice & melodies., and the string arrangements are so good. And Kevin Shields contributes some guitar. The first album didn't make nearly as big an impression when I heard it. Must go back & check it out again now.

Oh, oh, I see the free.fr site cut off one of the three photo panels that comprise Mazzy Star's FB page photo when KoalaCub9 tried to post it here. Maybe this means free.fr is anti-Masonic?? (Actually, I discovered this site will often cut off photos unless you reduce their size (i.e. the number of pixels).

As for Hope's religious or spiritual pursuits & beliefs, all I know is she grew up Catholic, sometimes makes references to both God & the Devil in her songs, & makes some rare interview comments re. religion in the 2009, SEPT. 24, COLORADO SPRINGS INDEPENDENT HOPE & COLM INTERVIEW findable in the thread here, "INTERVIEWS/Articles(32) Hope Sandoval & T.W.I.,2001 to 2010." In it, she says she believes in the power of prayer, & surprisingly suggests she finds some Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs interesting, though she says she's not a JW I'm glad to know she's not one, nor a Scientologist, thankfully!

I find some of the jehova's witnesses beliefs interesting, too. When I hear the song goodbye horses by q lazzarus, it makes me think of the crucification of jesus, and also chili's, which is where I first heard it in 1988 on a rainy night sitting in a stall pouring salt in my pockets because I was penniless and my plan was to trade about a pound of salt for a kit kat. But I was shown a vision, and that was that salt represented purification. I realized that one must have pure intentions in order to become one with God. So i put all the salt shakers back and apologized to the chef. Then i rode my bike for what seemed like an eternity, but was only a few blocks rise in the wind home and fell asleep. I never was very religious after that. Oh well.

I'll try and have a read of that article now. Do you know hopes beliefs on aliens?

Are you asserting there is currently a non-human migration crisis, comparative to a human one? If that is the case then it should be investigated immediately. Who knows how many could be slipping in with the Syrian refugees, for instance, under dubious circumstances. I believe that all creatures should have a place to live by the way.
