Mazzy Star-STILL EP+live shows 2018:Sydney+CALIF. (2 gigs)

Good news came out yesterday Mazzy Star will be active this year though we don't yet know to what extent.
At the very least they are slated to appear at three shows at Australia's Vivid Sydney annual multi-week-long festival. They're also reportedly releasing a new 4-song e.p. around the same time, called "Still"!
Mazzy Star will play 3 consecutive days at The Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, June 11, 12, & 13. Tickets go on sale March 23.

This link mentions the new e.p. release:

Consequence of Sound's claim this fest will mark Mazzy Star's first live performance in 5 years we know is incorrect as they played a full-band charity benefit in SF open to the public last Nov. 30, 2017 (recording findable in the boots list & on youtube). So, their Sydney appearance can only be their first live show in 6 months! Let's hope they will also play some European and North American dates this year.

If you're curious re. the BAND LINEUP for June, Derek W. James, who was reportedly a friend of long time Mazzy Star drummer, the late Keith Mitchell, will play drums. Another friend of the band posted this info publicly on their Facebook page. A comment under the post implies Josh Yenne (their pedal steel player) will be there. Long time band member Suki Ewers (keyboards + 2nd guitar) tweeted she will be there. We know Hope & David will be there, so that leaves just the bass player unnamed. Maybe Paul Mitchell (Keith's son) will play bass as he did on Mazzy Star's 2013 tour and at the SF charity benefit show they played last Nov., 2017. Colm played drums at that recent benefit and played bass for Mazzy Star on the 2012 tour. But Colm's band MBV is active this year, which may explain why he's not playing as a member of Mazzy Star in June (if he's not, that is).

[Later edit: There's now good reason to believe it will be Paul Mitchell on bass, and Colm won't be joining the band for these Sydney shows]

The new Mazzy Star 4-song e.p., "STILL," is to be released in 12-inch vinyl on June 1, 2018.
A couple of music retail sites are advertising it. The track listing is:
1) Quiet, The Winter Harbour; 2) That Way Again; 3) Still; 4) So Tonight That I Might See (Ascension Version).

So, track 4 is an alternate version of the 1993 song "So Tonight That I Might See ."
Track 2, "That Way Again" will be familiar to some fans as the band played the song live on its 2000 European tour. Both 2000 shows findable in the boots list thread have it. It's also on my youtube Channel, here: https://youtu.be/MPBkFUibx7Y
Music sites' info:
https://www.spincds.com/live-at-rockpal ... -dvd-55365
https://www.propermusic.com/product-det ... ill-254745
We have the sleeve art of the e.p. via the music sites, above. The sleeve looked quite abstract on first look, then I saw it as a treed landscape and liked it a lot better, 'cause it "took me to the trees," to quote a songwriter/singer we like at this site!

On Monday, April 16, a lot of music sites all posted articles about the forthcoming Mazzy Star "Still" e.p. It appears Brooklyn Vegan was first out of the gate with an article yesterday, then Consequence of Sound, SPIN, and many others followed, including many European based ones.

In their article, Brooklyn Vegan included my own yt upload of Mazzy Star's "That Way Again" embedded on their page because it will be on the e.p. But it's an old song the band played on their 2000 European tour. I have two live versions of it on yt, BV used the one from Copenhagen (instead of Oslo) 2000. It has the best sound quality of the two. Many other sites yesterday also embedded or linked to my "That Way Again" upload, which they appear to have gotten via BV, but only SPIN gave acknowledgement to BV for it. But BV thanked me at the very end of their own article with: "(Thanks Bob Beatty!)". Hermesacat is an alter ego of Bob (hello).BV must have seen my recent posts at the popular Facebook fan Group, including one noting the live versions on yt of "That Way Again."

On 2018-04-17, Mazzy Star quietly slipped on to youtube one new song from their forthcoming e.p. "Still," out June 1, 2018. The song is: "Quiet, The Winter Harbor," here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCW5f-ALm2s

Unfortunately, the youtube upload is BLOCKED in certain countries, including my own (Canada), and at least some European countries. But someone recommended a video unblocker site that works perfectly to unblock this Mazzy Star yt upload that's otherwise blocked to me in Canada. So, if you are in a country where the yt link is blocked, try viewing the same yt video via this unblocker site: https://sf2.unblockvideos.com/index.php ... mZKjgtJp1Q

Also, I found the song uploaded to Soundcloud where it should play okay and not be blocked, here:
https://soundcloud.com/mazzy-star-offic ... ter-harbor
It plays for me fine in Canada via Soundcloud.

[later edit - The song's reportedly on Spotify now too]

A lot of music sites picked up on the news of the new song yesterday. By luck, I came across it early, before any music news sites did and posted about it at the popular FB fan group
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q= ... al%20group
Sorry I'm slow posting about it here.

The Brooklyn Vegan was I think the first music news site to spread news about the new song yesterday . Others soon followed. The BV got their info from my posts at the FB fan Group, and gives me a "Thanks Bob Beatty!" shout out at the end of their write up, That's two times in a row just this week the BV (run by a big Mazzy/Hope fan) has been first out of the gate among music news sites with breaking Mazzy Star news while thanking me for being their source.
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/listen-to- ... -star-now/

Another funny thing is the Mazzy Star and Hope S&TWI official FB pages a number of times have found articles they like that they saw posted first at the FB fan Group. Then they put the same articles on their own official FB sites, soon thereafter. They never credit us at the FB fan Group directly, but we see evidence they get stuff from us sometimes! We've "scooped" them many times on news articles, info, etc. The bands have "spies" in the FB fan Group to tip them off to worthwhile material they themselves might like to post about. Some of us have had fun trying to figure out who all the band insiders are who have joined the fan group. Some use their real names, and others prefer being incognito.

Mazzy Star today, 2018-04-19, released an OFFICIAL VIDEO for the new song "QUIET, THE WINTER HARBOUR." It was first released earlier today via their own official Facebook page, here:
https://www.facebook.com/MazzyStarOffic ... f=mentions
Later today, the video got an authorized upload to youtube here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBbEVzg ... youtu.be&a
Usually, the band's videos include at least a glimpse of band members, but not in this one. No band members are viewable!

The text accompanying the video post at the official Mazzy Star FB page says, QUOTE:
"Take a look at these intoxicating hypnotizing visuals while you listen to our lovely new song... purrrrrrrrrfect!
(Stay tuned for more information on how to get it on vinyl.)"

- The cat-referencing coined word "purrrrrrrrrect" must be a Hope-ism!

"Quiet the winter harbor" has been 18 years in the making. It was the last song the band played on a live show they performed on June 8, 2000. I hung onto it for a long time and self titled it "Sinking," but given the band has released a studio version I think it's time to set the full show free.

Zarik:
That's the 2000 London show that has "Quiet, The Winter Harbor"? I didn't know till now that show had any rare, unreleased songs different than what the 2000 Copenhagen and Oslo shows (findable in the boots thread here) have, and didn't know this "new" song "Quiet..." is in fact another old song. More surprises! Years ago in a thread at the old Mazzy Star Boulevard fan site, I recall you mentioning you'd acquired a recording of Mazzy Star's 2000 tour London show. I'd hoped you might someday decide to share that 2000 London show with other fans (I know you put one song from it on youtube, the piano version of "Look on Down From the Bridge"), so am glad to know your intention now is to share it. Many Mazzy fans who enjoy live recordings will be grateful to you.

Here's the live version of "Quiet, The Winter Harbor"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhOnQ5LPys8

Almost everything from that abandoned 4th album that was supposed to come out in 2001 has been resurrected. My guess at what could have been:

1) Let That Be
2) Does Someone Have Your Baby Now?
3) When You Were Young
4) That Way Again
5) I'm Lesser Here
6) ??? - probably one of the other Hope or Mazzy songs that has come out since that could have been intended for this release - Maybe Seasons of Your Day, Common Burn, I've Gotta Stop, maybe "Still?"
7) Sparrow
8) Lay Myself Down
9) For The Rest of Your Life/Plain Gold Ring
10) Quiet, The Winter Harbor

This would have been a much different, arguably more stripped/acoustic album sounding way more like "Among My Swan". In hindsight, I think things worked out for the best and they were smart to only include what appears to be just 3 songs from the "originally intended" record on "Seasons of Your Day," spacing out the rest and adding their new stuff.

These songs are all way more mellow/restrained even for Mazzy Star/Hope, and would have marked a full on embrace of acoustic instruments (guitar, piano) (other than "For The Rest of Your Life").
