Re: Hope's Collabs With Other Artists - new one w. Psychic I

Postby MikeRMD » Fri Apr 01, 2016 2:39 am

Hello all,

Thanks Hermesacat for keeping us up to speed on all things Mazzy (and I note here that hopesandoval.com woke up and has news of the upcoming single, album, and this Psychic Ills collaboration). This is indeed a nice song although I would have much preferred the guitar solo to have been on regular guitar instead of steel. Maybe it's just me but I find the 'steel' sound to be overused.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike:
It's good Colin the typically asleep-at-the-switch webmaster at hopesandoval.com has competition now from Mazzy Star's official Facebook site which puts pressure on him to at least try to keep up with major developments posted at the FB site.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the song "I Don't Mind" at first either. My initial feeling was it was my least fave Hope collab of 11 to date. But happily, it's since grown on me. I lke steel guitar which I don't hear enough of as I don't hear a lot of country music. My first impression was there may have been too many things in the song sounding like musical cliches though. For instance, that descending keyboard "riff" intended to sound dramatic, no doubt, kind of irritated me. But it's tolerable now, & the song's quite listenable, if not one of my fave Hope collabs ever.

I've upped to youtube all 11 Hope collaborations together here:
https://youtu.be/8muWXqq9eu8
The 11 songs collected together make for an excellent unofficial Hope "album."

"The Spoils," New Hope song Collab. with Massive Attack released via Spotify and Youtube July 29, 2016
http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/07/m ... ls-listen/
There are a few different yt uploads of the song already, but all are blocked where I live (Canada) except this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQpnpvj ... e=youtu.be
One of the yt uploads I can't view/hear has a useful video description I can still read with the song's credits which show Hope co-wrote the song, as she did with the prior collab. she did with Massive Attack, "Paradise Circus," 2010. Also, note one of the two music publishing companies credited is "Sand Devil Music." A play-on-words with "Sandoval," no doubt.

Thanks again for keeping us up to date regarding news in the 'Mazzy' world. I like the song fine but it is nothing special compared to my 2 favorite collaborations which are 'Asleep From Day' and 'All This Remains'. I note with some irony that Hope's lyrics are not in the vein of 'Bavarian Fruit Bread' or 'Let That Be' in that in this new song she wishes someone from her past well.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike: re. Hope's lyrics, maybe her mood's mellowing with age, like a good bottle of Scotch!
This new one isn't among my top fave Hope collabs either, and I prefer her first collab with Massive Attack, "Paradise Circus," 2010. But I like all her collabs, and I've gotten to like this one more with repeated listenings.

And now a new official VIDEO of Hope's "The Spoils" song has been released via youtube, Aug. 9, 2016, directed by John Hillcoat, and starring two-time Academy award winner Cate Blanchett. Hope should be pleased about that.

Hope's song collab with Mercury Rev (cover of a 1968 Bobbie Gentry song, "Boss Man") has gotten an official youtube release today! Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RhTe6zfoys
The full album with other singers + the band Mercury Rev will be released Feb. 8, 2018
This Brooklyn Vegan article has yt links for Hope's version plus Bobby Gentry's original for comparison.
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/listen-to- ... y-tribute/
Hope's is a slower tempo version. I like both.

[later edit: I've since learned bluesman Jimmy Reed recorded the same song in 1961 and The Grateful Dead recorded it and played it many times, starting in 1966. "Big Boss Man" was written by Dixon and Smith in 1960].

Plus this article about the collab includes new interview quotes from Hope re. the song she sings "Bpss Man", here;
http://bellaunion.com/2018/12/mercury-r ... -boss-man/
I'll paste Hope's brief comments in full below:
HOPE QUOTE: "Well, the only boss man in my life is my cat Herman so this song was a bit tricky for me but I am so honoured to have been asked to be a part of this amazing group of women paying tribute to such an inspirational artist. I’ve always been a fan of Mercury Rev and Bobbie Gentry, so needless to say I am over the moon to be a part of this project."

Here's a publicity photo with an artist's rendering of Hope (based on a Luz Gallardo photo) superimposed over the sleeve photo for the Mercury Rev album Hope's "Big Boss Man" song is on, "Delta Sweete."
