A rare live Rain Parade (David Roback's early band) recording turned up at dimeadozen.org torrent site I've re-upped here:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/42htqwm ... M1-AUD.zip
It's been posted at Dime for 3.5 months but I didn't find it till recently as I forget to search for Rain Parade recordings there.

A good quality recording from a 1st generation audience cassette.
It was upped by Dime member kneesfudd. I'll paste the text file below.
[Trivia: According to a Hope interview, this same L.A. club, the Anti Club, was where Hope's duo, Going Home played their 3rd public gig ever, January 17, 1985, opening for The Minutemen and Sonic Youth]

New addition:

Opal - Ghost Highway (one song), 1988 studio recording with Hope on vocals:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/3mw8rew ... pe%20S.zip
This rare recording's existence was unknown to me till David Morgan (opalstardream) found it recently and shared it with me. As I said to David, you just never know what might turn up! To describe it, I'll paste below the text doc. included in the upload.
...................................................................................................
Opal - Ghost Highway (song), 1988, studio recording with Hope Sandoval on vocals
from "Rough Trade Promotional Cassette #2, July 1988"

A rare studio recording of Opal with Hope before the band changed their name
and started recording as Mazzy Star. Note, this is a (partially) different recording
of the song than what appeared later on the 1990 Mazzy Star album, She Hangs Brightly.
Hope's vocal performance is the same one on both recordings, and many of the song's
sections have the same instrumental performances on both. But as David Morgan
pointed out , there are definite differences too, starting with the drum rhythm at the
start of the song which is different on each. Plus the keyboards intro. is repeated 4 times on
the Opal version, but twice on the Mazzy Star one. And the mixes are different.

This song was issued July 1988 by Opal's label Rough Trade Records as part of a
promotional cassette compilation of songs by 12 different
Rough Trade bands. This Opal recording has never appeared in any Opal or Mazzy Star
discography listing, so far as I know, probably because it was not an official commercial
release but was issued on a promo cassette likely sent to radio stations, etc.
Plus, it was just one Opal song "hidden" inside a compilation. I've never seen this
recording mentioned anywhere before, and so never knew it existed.

David Morgan discovered the cassette for sale online in early 2016, bought it,
alerted me to its rare contents, and kindly sent a digital audio file he made from the cassette tape.
In this folder I've included a recording David sent, plus a version I made from it
where I adjusted some EQ levels using Audacity free audio software. I like to think my
EQ fiddling helped bring the guitars to the fore a bit more, and improved Hope's voice
slightly by reducing the low end on her voice. Listeners can decide for themselves
which they prefer. Also here's a scan David M. made of the cassette's cover with track listing, etc.
Note next to Roback's writing credit, it gives a catalog number for the then upcoming Ghost Highway
album, plus an expected release date, October (1988). But the album was never released.

David M. posted the song recording with a slideshow to a Mazzy Star and Hope Sandoval Facebook group,
here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/6071129794/ around Feb. 1 or 2nd, 2016, if you want to
scroll down and find it. He also posted there an audio comparison of the two Ghost Highway versions,
pointing out half a dozen sections of the song with the most evident differences.
He has a youtube channel under the name opalstardream with lots of Mazzy Star, Opal, Rain Parade,
Dream Syndicate, etc. uploads. He is member "opalstardream" at fan site mazzystar.free.fr .

In this folder is also an Opal article/interview from SPIN, March 1989, along with a band photo
from the article. mazzystar.free.fr webmaster Emma found and shared the article at the fan site.
It's significant re. band history as it's a rare interview (with Roback) from the time Hope was Opal's singer.
It also says that at that time the Opal album "Ghost Highway" was still slated for release.
But it never did get released except for this promo cassette release of the title song. Hope & David R.
later said in interviews that originally, in Opal Hope was to sing Roback-penned songs to record
(like this one). But sometime in '89 they decided (at Hope's urging, reportedly) to start writing
together instead and record under the name Mazzy Star - which would explain why
"Opal - Ghost Highway" the album, ended up getting shelved. As David M. says, it sounds like the entire
Ghost Highway album was likely finished, & must be out there intact somewhere.
Whether we'll ever get to hear it is another question!

New addition:

-Rain Parade, 1983, December 2, Maxwell’s, Hoboken, New Jersey FLAC:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/2oh393a ... oboken.zip

Excellent sounding recording. A FLAC upgrade of a Rain Parade (David's early 1980s Paisley Underground band) show previously findable in the Boots list in MP3 format. However, the prior recording findable here was incorrectly identified as being lossless FLAC but in fact it's a much smaller sized file in lossy MP3. So, this one's improved audio quality. It appears to be a rip from a bootleg CD of the show which pics of the CD covers included. It also has a first person account of the show from someone who attended. It derives from an audience master tape. I found the FLAC version as a torrent file at dimeadozen.org. It was upped there by DIME member mjcrossuk

Below is pasted the text from the description at DIME which includes a few lines at the beginning by mjcrossuk. The account appearing at the end is by someone else who attended.
...................................................................................
Hanwaker mentioned on the 'Welcome to Paisleyland' torrent that he preferred this show, so I thought it'd be a good idea to re-post it as it's not been here since 2010.

This was originally here in June 2009, posted by Guy_R_E, to whom all thanks are due.

Files are unchanged.

Audience Cassette Master >>> WAV SoundForge >>> Flac >>> Dime

Steve Roback ~ vocals, bass; David Roback ~ vocals, guitar; Matthew Pucci ~ vocals, guitar; Will Glenn ~ keyboards, violin; Eddie Kalwa ~ drums

This is a good audience tape and the band was in fine form during their first visit to the East Coast. I wish I could offer a soundboard recording because the audience was not always attentive on this night and a few of the slower songs are marred by some serious yackety-yak. It's frustrating, but I think this was partially the band's doing. They placed a large oriental rug on the floor in front of the stage covering the front half of the room and the audience was invited to sit down – the only time I remember that ever happening in the back room at Maxwell's. So there were 40-odd VIP's cozying together on the rug, which made the people in the (very crowded) back feel disconnected from the intimacy of the proceedings… I think that fomented a lot of the talking. I remember quite a few of the regulars scoffing at the neo-hippy rug situation when they came into the back room too… it was another beer-soaked night at Maxwell's.

My memories of the show are vivid. Rain Parade didn’t play very loud and they did an incredible job replicating the detail and dynamics of their recorded sound. Their cover of Syd Barrett's No Good Trying is note perfect.

CD artwork included.

Hermesacat wrote:In addition to the "new" 1994 Berlin Loft show posted in this thread yesterday, here's another one from Scott Simpson's collection, Paris (L'Arapaho), June 23, 1994.

Thanks for sharing these two shows. They both sound very good. Hope's vocals stand out very clearly on both recordings.

Hope Sandoval: vocals, tambourine, shakers, harmonica

If I remember right, Hope also played some electric guitar at this show. In the nineties, she used to play the rhythmic parts of their "noisiest" songs during their live performances. At this '94 Paris show, for example, she played the electric guitar on songs like She's my Babe, Bells Ring and Hair & Skin.
I think she also played some guitar during the American AMS tour when Umbilical and Happy were on their setlist.

This is a picture of Hope playing the guitar at the Black Sessions in '93:

She played the rhythmic parts of Bell Rings, Hair & Skin and Rock Section on her electric guitar during this radio session.

Another picture of Hope with her guitar, Manchester University Students' Union in October 93.

(Student in the audience: Give us a smile!
Hope: I don't do that.)
:)

I think she stopped playing the guitar after the AMS tour. In one of the articles you posted, she explained it was very difficult for her to sing and play the guitar at the same time and she admired the artists who could do both very well.

I play some guitar, harmonica, and the glockenspiel, but I don't like to do that so much. I like to firstly sing. It's a lot harder for me to get into playing guitar and bass. It's pretty pathetic, that it's really difficult for me to do both at the same time. A lot of people do it, and it's amazing when they can do both things really well.

Emma: I'm glad our (too) long absent webmaster has returned! Thanks for the added info re. Hope as a Mazzy Star guitar player, etc. I don't think I knew before the B & W guitar one was from the Black Session. Re. the Manchester "I don't do that (i.e. smile)" on command. I can hardly blame her, especially as she's nervous up there at the best of times!

I know you attended the '96 Paris Le Divan du Monde Paris show. Did you also attend the '94 L'Arapaho one &/or Black Session, I wonder?

New Addition:
Paradise Circus - Official Video for the Hope Sandoval - Massive Attack song collaboration, 2009, XXX-rated video
http://www.filefactory.com/file/6u5l9gy ... 202009.zip
This is an uncensored video file mazzystar.free.fr member hanwaker (Uli) sent me a long while ago. I realize now it's a much better quality video file in HD than the uncensored versions viewable at Vimeo are , such as here: https://vimeo.com/71961703
The Vimeo versions are much smaller files with slow bit rates.

Up until now, I haven't included any official videos of Hope or Mazzy Star songs in the boots list. That's 'cause they all seem to be easily findable at youtube, and I don't know of any better video quality of them than what's findable at yt. Plus anyone who wants their own copies can download them from youtube. ( By the way, I find the easiest, most dependable way to DL yt videos presently is to use Firefox browser with some of the free Firefox video downloader Add-ons you can get that DL videos from sites such as yt). Because this video file from hanwaker is much better quality than what's findable online, I'm adding it to the boots list.

I should mention I was prompted to revisit the "Paradise Circus" video recently after I made a post to the popular Mazzy Star & Hope Facebook fan Group with info. re the XXX-rated video along with a Vimeo link. My post got removed by some over-zealous Group administrator (one of five) who apparently didn't like the porn aspect. But surely, by far the most important aspect of it is it's an official video of a Hope song (she co-wrote & sings it), a video she herself likes & approved, & is an unusual & interesting aspect of Hope's career. That's what makes it appropriate to include at a Hope-Mazzy fan site, & INAPPROPRIATE, imo, to suppress & delete info about it from a Hope fan site.

See p. 3 of the "Band(s) History" thread for a long post re. this song & video, with quotes from Hope aboout it;
and see p. 5 of the "Youtube Links" thread for info. re. my yt upload relating to the video.

The censorship started me thinking about the video again and it occurs to me many Hope fans likely don't even know about this video. Newer fans, or fans who weren't paying close attenton 5 or 6 years ago, may have missed it. So, it deserves to be made better known, which I'm doing now at this site, & via a new youtube upload I made. Viva "Paradise Circus"!

A few OPAL band additions/updates:

-Someone at the Facebook fan group asked about availability of Opal's 1987 album, "Happy Nightmare Baby" with Kendra Smith singing (before Hope replaced her as singer in Opal later that same year, 1987). It seems it's not in print now and doesn't seem available to buy via iTunes, etc. So, it qualifies for inclusion in this boots list.
You can download a CD-rip of the album in lossless FLAC format here:
-Opal - Happy Nightmare Baby (album) 1987:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/61nlujb ... 20FLAC.zip

-The 1988 live (audience) VIDEO of an entire Opal concert in Italy with Hope singing Opal songs (mostly) has been available via this boots list for years. But the prior version listed had the video broken up into 4 parts and in .vob format, a format some media players & many video editing programs don't accept. I previously upped the video to a file hosting site the same way as I'd received it from Dimeadozen torrent sharing site, i.e. in 4 parts in .vob format.

But recently, I was able to join the 4-parts together in .mpeg format (a format more widely accepted) in identical quality & file size as the original. So, this is the new, improved upload you can DL here:
-Opal - VIDEO - live 1988 (w. Hope), Entire Italy show, 90+ mins.:

https://mega.nz/#!iMdlnCAY!EiC1A-MeugVS ... 38K0bNboPg

OR here:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/95hsrmi ... 0Italy.zip

-Also, someone noticed the link here for the album "Opal - Early Recordings vol. 2" was dead. I replaced it with a new working link (check the list for it).

New Additions:
Someone at the Mazzy Star/Hope FB Group mentioned two Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions e.p.s are out-of-print, i.e.

http://www.filefactory.com/file/5eexhpi ... 20FLAC.zip
-Suzanne (2002):
http://www.filefactory.com/file/62rid5d ... 20FLAC.zip
so I figure they should qualify for inclusion in this boots list.

At The Doorway Again
Track listing:
1.Around My Smile (Sandoval, Ó Cíosóig, Alan Browne, Paul McQuillan) 4:38
2.Charlotte (Sandoval) 4:32
3.Sparkly*(Sandoval, Ó Cíosóig) 2:31
4.Down the Steps* (Sandoval, Ó Cíosóig) 3:43

Suzanne
Track Listing
1 Suzanne (Hope Sandoval) (radio edit) 3:31
2 I Thought You'd Fall for Me* (Colm O'Ciosoig / Hope Sandoval) 4:53
3 These Things* (Colm O'Ciosoig / Hope Sandoval) 3:00
4 Friends of a Smile* (Colm O'Ciosoig / Hope Sandoval) 2:44
*This e.p. version of the song Suzanne is shorter than the one on
the album "Bavarian Fruit Bread" (2001).
Some of these songs also appeared on the album Bavarian Fruit Bread (2001).
*The five songs with asterisks were released only on e.p.s/singles.

Hello Hermesacat (mostly him as he kindly maintains this portion of this site kindly provided by Emma),

I haven't gone through this entire post and nor have I even listened to much of what has been provided but I have heard 2 or 3 things from a Syd Barrett tribute album titled 'Beyond the Wildwood' from ~30 years ago including the Opal adaptation of 'Jugband Blues' which they titled 'If the Sun Don't Shine' which I believe is available in this thread. The LP is long out of print but might just squeak in here with the connection to Opal and so maybe the whole LP could be made available here. The reviews for the LP are very good and what I've heard backs that up. I had purchased the Mojo magazine issue that had the CD with HS&TWI's cover of Syd's 'Golden Hair' but I foolishly lent it to someone with much music in them but not much stability so bye-bye to my CD. Oh well.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike:
I've never possessed a copy of that Syd Barrett tribute album you cite. Someone once sent me the one song from it, The Opal one with Roback singing. You're right it's findable in the boots list. I added the song to the file for "Opal - Early Recordings vol. 2." I see the album's listed as a torrent file online. I'm trying to DL it now, but currently no one is seeding (uploading) it. Will let you now if I'm successful.
[later edit: April 11, a week and a half later & still no one is seeding "Under the Wildwood" as a torrent. It seems to be "dead" with no one sharing it anymore]
