Thanks Emma for posting about those live recording releases. Europe reportedly has looser
copyright laws now than the U.S. and elsewhere. Someone in the FB group explained that
in Europe, live music broadcasts over 20 years old are now deemed public domain, which means anyone can release them for sale without artists authorizing them or receiving royalties. For this reason, I don't think U.S. retailers sell them, and at least some European sellers will not ship them to the U.S. The same releases would be breaking copyright laws in the U.S. and elsewhere, apparently. From audio files I've heard of the new releases, they sound identical to files of the same shows long available in the boots section of this site. Those recordings I originally found at dimeadozen live show torrent sharing site years ago. But they've long been unavailable at Dime since Dime is not an archive and shows get de-listed there after 30 days without a download.

If someone Google searches "Mazzy Star bootlegs," last I checked, the first search result
that comes up is a link the the boots list at this .fr fan site. So, I don't even view it as far fetched to think the new releases were possibly sourced from my own uploads of the bootleg files listed here that originally came from the dimeadozen site, as the boots listed here aren't hard to find online.

Note: Two 1980s Opal albums, Happy Nighmare Baby, and Early Recordings (Vol. 1) have been
re-released in authorized re-issues as of Nov. 1, 2019. Rough Trade, among others, is selling them now. Since they're back in print, I today removed them from the boots list 'cause I only intended them to be available there while out of print, which they were for years.

I'm way behind on projects, including some here. There are a couple of "new" 1990s interviews to be posted, and some more bad download links to be replaced. Also,some photos to be added to the photos thread. Hopefully, I'll be more active soon.

In recent days I've checked every download link above to see if it's still working. I was surprised at how many were still not working but have belatedly replaced every bad link by now. I hope to be more vigilant in future at keeping links intact.

There was a 2009-2010 cassette-only release by musician N. Shineywater (Nathan Shineywater, a.k.a. Nathan Peters) called "Reach the Oldest Tree." Side A has two songs credited to N. Shineywater, while
Side B has just one song. Side B is credited to Berry Shadows and the song's titled "All Moss Under the Sun."
Discogs site has info. including this helpful info. posted as a "Review" comment, QUOTE:
"B Side of the tape is by Nathan Shineywaters new band called Berry Shadows.
Berry Shadows is a band made up of N Shineywater, Hope Sandoval, Colm O'Cossaig (my bloody valentine)
and others."

I've finally uploaded this release to youtube. Unfortunately, Hope does not sing on it. Though the first track on side A is super lovely, Nathan Shineywater is a great songwriter and singer. The rest of the tape is fairly avant and "out" leaning. I love drone and I also love Brightblack Morning Light, maybe some of you here also do too.

@rowansuxx: With a few exceptions (e.g. Hope's collabs with other artists I collected together), and maybe CD rips of e.p.s that went out of print but whose songs may now be available now in some kind of retail downloadable form - though perhaps not lossless), I've avoided including in-print recordings in the boots list. 'Cause it's best to support the artists this site's dedicated to, and not risk getting them too riled at us. So, posting DL links to Hope albums doesn't seem right, imo.

@Neal Cassady: Belated thanks for sharing your info and yt links for Nathan Shineywater's "Reach the Oldest Tree," a recording that purportedly has Hope Sandoval and Colm O'Ciosoig on it. I'm glad you solved the mystery of "Does Hope sing on this Shineywater release?" Now we know she doesn't. I enjoyed listening to your yt uploads of the cassette. I like all three songs.

I'd thought odds were likely low Hope sang on it as surely someone would have picked up on the fact some time since 2010 and made mention of it online somewhere.

There still remains one mystery though, imo: Do Hope & Colm appear on that recording in any capacity? After doing more research, I've become skeptical Hope is playing anything on the recording at all. Instruments she typically plays on her own recordings are mostly harmonica, tambourine, shakers, glockenspiel, and sometimes guitar and keyboards, uncredited. Keyboards seem the only possible Hope instrument on Shineywater's recording. She played glockenspiel on the song "Harmony" by Le Volume Courbe, but that's the only example I know of of Hope playing an instrument, rather than just singing, on someone else's record.

Discogs site shows two different cassette releases of the e.p. "Reach the Oldest Tree," one from 2009 and one from 2010. They have identical track listings of the same three songs. The 2009 one credits just two musicians, Rachel Grimes for piano, and Shineywater for voice, flute, keyboards, and percussion. Tour posters for the 2010 Australian tour advertised "Brightblack Morning Light as Berry Shadows."

I'm guessing the "Berry Shadows" name or credit appears on the 2010 release of "Reach the Oldest Tree" but not on the 2009 one because Shineywater had, as described in the press, by 2010 decided to start using Berry Shadows as a name on projects and bands going forward.

A number of press articles/interviews from March-April 2010 from the time of Shineywater's 2010 Australian tour announce Shineywater was then currently working with or was soon to be working with Hope Sandoval (plus Colm O' Ciosoig, according to one report) on a collaborative 7" Berry Shadows vinyl single to be released. Evidently, Shineywater was announcing this collaboration to various press outlets. Which means he did not intend for Hope and Colm to appear on his recording incognito, anonymously, or uncredited. So, why would he leave them uncredited on the "Reach The Oldest Tree" cassette if they were actually on it?

I think the most likely scenario is a Berry Shadows collaboration with Hope and Colm (a 7" vinyl single), was planned but was never completed or never released. And that some people mistakenly thought The Reach The Oldest Tree cassette WAS the supposed collaboration with Hope and Colm, when in fact they likely did not appear on that recording at all.

Your yt uploads don't give the title of the "Reach The Oldest Tree" cassette, or give names of songs. How come? Many thanks again for sharing your recordings and helping solve a mystery!

Sound is good. As a bonus it also has Detroit blues band the Soledad Brothers set that opened the show. I'm told Hope & Colm were fans of (now defunct band) The Soledad Brothers and asked them to open on this 2002 tour. I like them. Thanks go to hanwaker for sharing this show.
