General discussion about Mazzy Star

Hi all,

It's disappointing to read about jerks and chatterers in some audiences but heartening to read that Hope is not ruining shows by over-reacting to such annoyances. Indeed as Hermesacat notes with a chuckle "Hope added some new lyrics to a song" .

When i wrote on MS Blvd about the poor attitude by Hope and Colm at the HSATWI show in Vancouver someone responded by saying that it was sort of justified because the artists had to put up with lousy tour busses and that they had to 'play the same songs every night'. Bullshit and more bullshit! First off those busses are very luxurious and travelling can be a joy for many. As to the second Hermesacat mentions that he wishes that MS weren't playing the same 13-15 songs every night and that's an issue i have wanted to address for a long time. Mazzy Star music is great (i love it!) but it's not uber complex with time changes galore etc. Musicians who were in Frank Zappa's band had to know and rehearse ~100 songs according to the lore that's out there as Frank would call out a song title and the band would seque into that one. One of the times i saw Frank and band in Vancouver they did over an hour's worth without any break none of which i knew. Then Frank said (with the band still playing) that "we started the show with 17 unreleased songs which other bands don't do because they're smart" and then they did 'Joe's Garage'. What a great show that was! Mazzy Star could rehearse 20-30 songs and vary setlists night by night which would give the band some variety and in the long run benefit the audiences at the shows because the musicians would be more into it (wouldn't hurt those of us who listen to live tapes either would it :P ). There's absolutely no reason why they have to 'play the same songs every show'. I'm not trying to harp on them as i credit Hope with better reaction to any less than optimal audience behaviour that she's had to endure. Good on her for that :!:

Cheers,
Mike

Mike,

I wrote about the Vancouver show at the old site but i'm not sure anyone read it as no one replied... basically i said that there was a misunderstanding about why Hope stormed off the stage and then quit early. I spoke with the guitarist before the show when their bus arrived, and again after the show as they were taking down equipment (and he took my cd backstage and had everyone autograph it). First of all, they were hassled getting over the border, and that's not the first time... I read that on their 2002 tour their bus got ripped apart by the border cops heading to Toronto.

Also, they were missing one guitarist as he had a criminal record so they left him in the states so as not to have further troubles getting across the border and back.

But on the stage was the main problem. He said that every time they'd play a certain note, i forget which, there would be a very very loud resonance on stage that could not be heard in the audience, but apparently it would make the whole stage rumble and was extremely annoying for them. So, it was an issue of a terrible venue, and possibly a terrible sound techie. For a band that is focused on playing lovely music and not necessarily on putting on a fancy show, I can understand that that would be a deal breaker.

just thought i'd clarify that a little.

Another review of the Nov. 10 Denver show:
http://blogs.westword.com/backbeat/2013 ... 0-2013.php

Forum member "creek" attended the L.A. Wiltern show Nov. 7 & shot 3 video clips from near the stage:
California, So Tonight That I Might See, & I've Been Let Down. Those were the last 3 songs the band performed at the gig & were done in two encores. The first two songs are complete, while I've Been Let Down gets cut-off early. Image-wise, I've Been Let Down is the standout as creek got some nice, clear images of Hope on that one. She's more ghostly in the other two. The sound quality's pretty good, & I have his permission to upload them to you tube, here:
http://youtu.be/US1ltbRAXss
Thank you creek.
For the youtube upload, the three clips have been put together into one video.

Also, I've upped the Nov. 6 San Francisco show (audio) to yt, here:
http://youtu.be/Q6P0Oybhlqk

No kidding about the band being narrow, unadventurous, unimaginative (& lazy?) in their set lists. Don't they get bored playing nearly identical sets night after night? Some lucky cities are getting to hear a few extra songs though. California, & I've been Let Down are two I wish they'd played in Seattle. The new bass player is likely to be less familiar with their catalogue than prior bassists, & maybe they haven't rehearsed many songs with him. But surely they could find some time on the road to learn a few more songs & mix up the sets a bit.
As Mike suggests, this tour so far appears to have not been designed with bootleg recordings collectors in mind, nor fans that follow the band from show to show!

After listening to I've Been Let Down, I thought:

This song could be directed to an audience:
"I've been let down and I'm still coming around. I've been put down, and I'm still coming 'round for you."

From setlist.fm, the set from Minneapolis, MN, Nov. 12:

Look on Down From the Bridge
Cry, Cry
In the Kingdom
Lay Myself Down
Ride It On
Does Someone Have Your Baby Now?
Into Dust
She Hangs Brightly
Halah
Fade Into You
Blue Flower
Disappear

ENCORE:
Flying Low
California
So Tonight That I Might See
**************************************
It looks like pretty much every city's getting 13 songs the same. Plus, some are lucky to also hear one or two among these other three: Flying Low, California, I've Been let Down.
********************************************************************************
alas: We're fortunate stage-shy Hope's ''still coming "round'', despite being stage-shy, & being subjected to some insufficiently appreciative, ill-behaved audiences.

The mystery bass & violin player on the 2013 tour has been identified as Paul Mitchell, drummer Keith Mitchell's son, according to a commenter at my youtube upload of the Seattle show. That thought did cross my mind earlier as I recall having read Keith Mitchell's son had played (I think guitar) on some 2012 Mazzy gigs. But I decided it unlikely the 2013 bassist was him as he looked too old to likely be Keith's son, but I could easily be wrong on that.
So, the bass player mystery may be solved.

Technically, 2012 - but hey - is that a smile on Hope's face when she walks on stage?

A positive review of Mazzy's Nov. 17 Montreal show at Club Soda:
http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/br ... omepromo|1
That Chicago show Timeout review Emma posted a link for is great for photos. It's got some nice ones from this tour (later update: I see those photos came from Mazzy's official facebook page).

alas - Hope's expression in that 2012 yt clip looks fairly neutral to my eyes, rather than a smile.
Plus, if the stage-shy one just walked out onstage in front a huge festival audience (which she says makes her more uncomfortable than halls) I suspect she'd feel at that moment there wasn't a lot to smile about!
