General discussion about Mazzy Star

Alien is derived from the latin word alienus - foreign, unconnected, strange. For the record, we are all aliens, being born of stardust, yet in the larger picture we are all connected, as human beings and intergalactic members of space. :ugeek:

Speaking of word meanings, does anyone know if this definition from Urban Dictionary has any connection to the band name?

Mazzy: "The most amazing person that you will eva meet she funni she mad but shes my wife 2 be and i neva be alone with out her shes my star shes my everything. also very sexy and Grrrrrreat in bed"

Koalacub9 That's whacky that supposed definition of "mazzy" as urban slang. I've never heard "mazzy" so used.
In interviews, Roback has said they chose the name "Mazzy Star" in 1989 because it suggested to them a kind of "western" feel they liked the sound of. Since Roback's earlier band "Clay Allison" (later renamed "Opal") was named after the historical Clay Allison who, according to Wikipedia, "was a cattle rancher, cattle broker, and sometimes gunfighter of the American Old West," it seems likely Roback meant "western" re. Mazzy Star in a similar way, although there's no historical person of the Old West with that name. There was an infamous Old West female outlaw, associated with the James-Younger gang, called Belle Starr, though.

Ahh, thanks for the low down. I can feel where they were coming from with that choice. If I recall correctly, She Hangs Brightly had a couple of country/blues tinged numbers on it. In fact, after looking it up it seems I'm Sailin' was a Minnie McCoy cover. I wonder what other older covers they've done over the years live, etc.

Also, they could have been influenced by this band, Gandalf. ;)

Yes, Koalacub9 it is too quiet in this forum. Many people apparently like Facebook nowadays, and gravitate to
the popular FB fan group here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/6071129794/
I haven't been too active in posting there (as "Bob Bee") yet (although have been in the last few days), but it's very popular. Facebook appeals to lots of people. It's more interactive, and you get automatic notifications of new posts, new comments, & new thumbs votes on your own posts, etc. I can see the appeal of it. I'm a reluctant FB user myself. I've read too many articles about FB abusing users privacy rights, plus I don't like the idea of FB or anyone tracking who all my friends and relatives are, etc. So, I have a FB "dummy" account with a fake name & age so I can access pages & groups I like, but that I don't use for networking.

There are definite important advantages to a site like mazzystar.free.fr. This site is SO much better for organized sections, and archiving of recordings, articles, photos, etc., whereas the FB fan site is just one long series of random posts to scroll through. Both sites are useful, imo. But yes, I wouldn't mind seeing mazzystar.free.fr have more activity and participation (not least of which by our webmaster Emma who has gone quiet for a very long time [Where are you these days, Emma?]
).

Btw, re. songs Mazzy Star has covered and played live, there's a compilation listed in the Boots list I put together of cover song recordings by Opal (with Hope) and Mazzy Star recorded or played live, together with the original recordings by the original artists.

You raise good points about both formats. I was never a huge fan of FB at first, and still secretly wish something better would come along, but I have to admit it's pretty convenient and touches a large part of the world. I'll join the group - but do you think I should change my real name to Koala Cub in order to be recognized? I decided I actually don't like koala bears all that much because they are overly picky in their tree selection and the babies eat their mother's diarrhea.

Thanks for the headsup. I thought they had returned to the darkness for good and I hadn't checked their FB page for a long time.
I like the songs I heard off the Volume Courbe's new album. I find Charlotte Marionneau' voice and melodies very pleasant.

Given Hope's reluctance to be in the spotlight, it's hard to imagine her play in movie, especially as a female fighter in a martial arts/action movie. :D
I don't think she would accept a part in a Hollywood superhero movie either since she described the Batman For Ever movie (whose soundtrack includes Mazzy Star's song "Tell me now") as "horrible" and left the movie premiere after five minutes.
I don't know her favorite movie genres but I read she admired the work of Russian director Yuri Norstein:

Hermesacat wrote:Oh, oh, I see the free.fr site cut off one of the three photo panels that comprise Mazzy Star's FB page photo when KoalaCub9 tried to post it here. Maybe this means free.fr is anti-Masonic?? (Actually, I discovered this site will often cut off photos unless you reduce their size (i.e. the number of pixels).

If you need more space to post pictures, you can try the upload option which is available when you compose your post.
The disavantages of this feature are the scrollbars around the picture and the odd layout of the picture in the frame; to hide the scrollbars, just click on the picture: the scrollbars disappear and the full picture displays (with a strange layout if the picture is big :? ).

Emma: Thanks for the helpful hints re. uploading photos to avoid having them get cut off and without having to diminish their resolution by making them smaller, pixel-wise ( an extra small project in itself).

I much like Le Volume Courbe's "...Dee Dee Ramone album" too, & streamed it via Deezer a bunch of times, & wrote in comments under Hope's(?) FB post how much I (too) like Charlotte's voice & that she, like Hope, has a rare gift for melody, imo. My comment noted Hope, David, & Colm had all played on Le Volume Courbe's prior, 2005 album which many FB readers likely didn't know. And I included a link to a Pitchfork article re. the new album where one can hear one song from it streamed. I was pleased Charlotte showed up to give a thumbs up "like" to my comment (FB shows you who likes your comment), as did Lori Reyes, one of Mazzy Star's photographers for their 2013 tour.

Re. Batman Forever, I never saw it so I don't know what the opening scenes are that Hope walked out of, but I recall it got some poor reviews (worse than other Batman movies). So, who knows, but maybe it was that particular movie that repulsed her rather than Batman in general.
