General discussion about Mazzy Star

Re: Photos

I haven't come across a lot of Opal pictures with Hope. Here's one I found in an old Spin issue (March 1989):

There's also a short article with a few quotes from David about Hope, after Kendra Smith's departure.

I have just viewed a YT slideshow with a picture similar to the one Hermesacat posted above. The only difference is the wider angle of view:

Really interesting finds, Emma. Thanks for posting.

I've now posted text of the March, 1989 SPIN article/interview in the "Interviews/articles (vintage) Mazzy Star" thread even though it's a pre-Mazzy Star article. It's got band history interest as it's the only interview I know of from 1989, the year Opal became Mazzy Star. This article evidently dates from the time before Hope & David decided to start writing songs together. From the descriptions the journalist writes re. the then planned forthcoming album, "Ghost Highway," it sounds as if he was played tracks from it, perhaps a bunch of them. But that planned album must have gotten scrapped, & is long lost, except for the title song written by Roback alone which made it onto "She Hangs Brightly" (plus maybe its two cover songs, plus "Give You My Lovin'" Hope brought from her Going Home duo) since the interview has Roback identifying himself as band songwriter & doesn't suggest Hope was yet co-writing then. But we know most songs on "She Hangs Brightly" are credited to Roback & Sandoval together.

The Opal photo's a welcome rarity for being a rare Opal-era Hope pic, as Emma mentions, but also as there seem to be few off-stage publicity photos of either Opal or Mazzy Star that include band members other than Hope & David. I wonder why Will wasn't included in the photo or mentioned in the article. Thanks too for posting the more complete version of that photo of Hope.

-Btw Emma, would you happen to know why I seem unable to embed any photos into the Mazzy Star Interviews (vintage) thread? I don't have trouble embedding photos in this thread, but when I try to there, only the computer code shows up, but no photo.

Hermesacat,

I haven't been able to fix the problem. I suspect the first post of the thread got corrupted :? as the problem only occurs there. Your code resolves correctly when it is embedded into the other posts of the thread ou into a new thread.
I'll submit a question on the phpbb support forum to get help. If the problem cannot be fixed, the only workaround I can think of is copying the content of your first post into the clipboard, deleting the first post and the second post (which doesn't contain MS-related info) and replacing the content of the third post (which doesn't contain MS-related info) with your articles. The third post will contain your articles and will become the first post of thread. We can keep the fourth post as is. The thread will then include only two posts.
Another workaround is copying/pasting your first long post into a new thread. If we have to start a new thread, I suggest we split the big post into multiple posts. I don't know if the size of the first post is the cause of the problem but it may be easier for the database to handle smaller posts.
I'll keep you posted if I get a response or a solution from the phpbb support forum.

Thanks Emma. If you can't find out a way to fix the no-photos problem via site support I'll try your suggested ways to fix it. I too wondered if the extra long length of the articles post might be interfering with embedding photos.
With luck, there will be a fix as it would be nice to embed photos that appeared with the original articles.

I got a fix from the the phpbb support site. Your embedded pictures are now visible.
I saw you had already updated the HSWI Interview thread with pictures. Looks nice. Thanks!

Emma:
That's great you got the technical problem fixed & that we now have some embedded photos in the Mazzy Star (vintage) articles thread. Thanks.

Yes, I've finally updated the Hope interviews thread with all the articles I know of, plus embedding articles' photos. Rather slow, wasn't I?

Twenty five years ago this month (May), Mazzy Star's "She Hangs Brightly" album was released. A Wikipedia entry gives the release date as May 21 that year. Here's a photo from a page bottom of the May 19, 1990 issue of Melody Maker with an ad for "She Hangs Brightly" dating from the week it was being released in the U.K.

Image

I bought that MM issue at the news stand when it first came out back in 1990 'cause it had an interview with Tom Verlaine, who I like. The pages with Tom's interview got saved all these years, & just by luck, the Mazzy Star album ad is on one of those pages. Sadly, I wasn't really aware of Mazzy Star till two decades later when I belatedly became a fan (better late than never). So, it was a pleasant surprise to come across that ad, years later, after I'd become a Mazzy Star fan, among files of old interviews I'd kept.

Btw, I didn't know what "the beat boom" reference in the ad meant, at first. It turns out it refers to the rock n roll revival in England of the early 1960s that soon got exported to the rest of the world as "the British Invasion."

Years ago at now defunct fan site mazzystar.nu, I posted a link to a photo of this same ad. The old one was photographed in artificial light which, with my camera, gave it an ugly dark yellow tinge. The new pic was photographed today in bright sun & looks better, colour-wise. I didn't even need to try correcting the colour today, something I didn't yet know how to do when I first photographed it a few years back. The 1990 newsprint still looks white enough (well, pale grey) in sunlight.

The only way I could figure out how to make the wide format photo fit the mazzystar.free.fr photos thread is I needed to re-size it, & make it smaller. When I tried to embed larger sizes, the right side of the photo was cut off in the thread.

Unfortunately, resizing to a smaller size with fewer pixels makes for poorer resolution. You can view a better res version of the same photo where I've upped it here: http://imgur.com/lteFJRF

Hi all,

I still poke my head in here on occasion and have read some of the interviews kindly posted in the forum. I hadn't checked out MS on Ebay for ages but happened to now and noticed a listing for Mazzy Star clippings (I think it said paper as well) and there is a picture or two I don't recall seeing before. Also an article with the title 'Incense and Insolence' below a pic of D&H. I hadn't seen that before although I have not read everything that has been added to the Interview thread. Funny title though!

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike for the heads up re. the ebay listing for the Mazzy Star article clippings. I found the listing here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MAZZY-STAR-maga ... 567495edab
Scrolling down the ebay page, you'll see 5 photos of clippings.
There's just one photo I'd not seen before, here:
It's from an interview from Details mag, Dec. 1994. It's a bit out of focus, though, "thanks" to the ebay seller's photo, & is an angled shot of a magazine page instead of straight on.
Image

On researching the 5 photos shown at ebay, it turns out they include pages from 4 different interviews, 3 of which are already findable in the thread here entitled "INTERVIEWS/Articles (26) Vintage, Mazzy Star, 1989 to 1997." Besides the Details mag one, there's "Incense & Insolence" Mike mentions. It's from Rolling Stone, Oct. 20, 1994. And there's a page from a Guitar Player mag interview, Nov. 1994. The above 3 interviews' text are all reproduced here already in the interviews thread mentioned above. Also, the ebay photos include some magazine ads for Mazzy Star albums, & an album review of "Bavarian Fruit Bread."

The one ebay interview that 's not findable at this site yet is a Hope Sandoval one from an unknown mag from either 2001 or 2002. Based on its title & intro, it's one I've not read before, and unfortunately, STILL can't read it as the ebay seller ever so cleverly made sure his or her camera was out-of-focus just enough to ensure the text on all the mag pages (except for large print titles & intros) is too fuzzy to read, even when zoomed in on ("Wanna read 'em? Gotta buy 'em!"). This type of "cleverness" I don't admire. Oh, well, at least 3 out of 4 we can read already.

From the ebay photos, I learned this already known photo (a good one), below, is from the Oct. 20, 1994 Rolling Stone interview, "Incense & Insolence." I'll add the photo to the article's text in the interviews thread too but in a slightly different version found online that's a bit poorer resolution/quality but is not cropped as much as this one I found is. Thank you Mike.
