There was a review somewhere that said something along the lines of "the album is so perfectly Mazzy Star that it's hard to believe." They took the words right out of my mouth. As good as the last My Bloody Valentine album was, it wasn't the same. It sounded like classic MBV, but there was a certain spark missing. But there's none of that here. Seasons of Your Day is Mazzy Star coming back, and being exactly as fantastic as they ever were. This isn't a case of a band releasing three albums in their "heyday" and then releasing a half-decent record years later. We now have four completely beautiful Mazzy Star LPs. It's the best kind of comeback.

I love everything on record, but the middle section (Does Someone to Sparrow) is the highlight for me. Sparrow is especially gorgeous. Whenever I listen to the whole album, I always find myself giving Sparrow a couple more play-through's than anything else. It's so sweet and pretty, and it's probably my favourite ever vocal from Hope. When you listen on headphones, you can really get a full grasp of her range. One second she's singing in a minor key, the next her voice shoots up to the point where you almost can't hear her any more. It sounds beautiful.

Hello all,

I wish I could agree with those who love this album but i'm not among them. I came to Mazzy Star music from hearing 'Rhymes of an Hour' while watching 'Stealing Beauty' and then went out and bought the first CD I could find which was STTIMS, sat down with headphones on and listened to it from beginning to end with my jaw dropping. That kind of experience doesn't happen now as much with leaks online etc so maybe that has something to do with my 'underwhelming' response to listening to the new album. I'd heard 2 of the songs on the 2000 tour bootleg, 2 more from the single released a couple of years ago, and then a couple of more live from when they toured a year or so ago. So there wasn't much new to me and that possibly has had an effect on my response. That said I have always loved 'Sparrow' and can state that the way Hope sings on that song is what I love so much about their music (Homeostasis writes in better detail about this). I prefer the arrangement of the song on the 2000 bootleg better as it doesn't have tambourine all through the song but just in a very tasteful section like the short keyboard turn on HSATWI's 'These Things'. It's a minor quibble though as I love both versions of 'Sparrow'. Overall though I don't have a high opinion of the album. Too much has a 'heard something similar before' quality to it and there's lack of the 'spark' that Homeostasis writes as well about the My Bloody Valentine reunion (someone on YouTube commented that 'Lay Myself Down' sounded much like 'I've Been Let Down'). To me this album pales in comparison to the 3 MS albums and 'Through the Devil Softly' which perhaps is not a fair comparison as those 4 albums are hard to match. Still we'll soon have new live Mazzy Star music to listen to and that's all good!

Cheers,
Mike

I'm much closer to agreeing with homeostasis' take on Seasons of Your Day than Mike's as I'm not disappointed. As Mike notes, 6 out of 10 songs on it (+ California a 7th after its early release) were already familiar to many fans from live recordings & the 2011 single. I already knew I liked those songs, with some being among my fave Mazzy songs ever (e.g. Does Someone Have Your Baby Now being one) & I loved the 2011 single. When I first heard California it sounded a bit of a yawner, but after a few listenings I loved it too. The live version of Spoon I was familiar with wasn't quite as appealing as some other Mazzy songs but the album version with Bert Jansch on guitar is better, & very good. I didn't expect the album to disappoint, & the 3 songs I hadn't heard before also appeal.

Judging from interviews, Hope & David had a huge collection of unreleased songs to choose from in
assembling this album. As far back as 1996 & after Among my Swan had been released David said at that time they had already had a couple of albums worth of unreleased songs then. Since they now say they've been writing & recording through the years since 1996, who knows how many more songs they have stored in their ''vaults'' ? Probably lots. Which suggests the songs on the album were likely carefully chosen by the band & represent their own favourites among a large number to choose from. I view Hope as possessing a rare talent few have for consistently writing & delivering emotive melodies. I don't hear any second rate songs on the album, & to my ears the album demonstrates Hope's & David's talents remain intact. If I have a regret about the new album it would be only that they limited the release to just 10 songs, most of which I was already familiar with in some form. How about a multi-CD box set of a whole swath of those other unreleased songs they're hiding away? Yes! (Well, too bad, according to a recent interview, they seem to say ''no'' to such an idea.)

Hi all,

I can be a prickly person as you may have noticed but several times i've seen in reviews that the 'original' lineup is on 'Seasons'. Sadly Will Cooper (Glenn) passed away over a decade ago and so cannot be part of the touring band but is credited on the album so they must have used something recorded with him way back then. However my issue with what has been said is that original bassist Jill Emery is not on the album nor is she part of the touring band. Colm has been playing bass on all the live stuff i've seen and he wasn't part of the original (or 'CLASSIC' as i prefer to put it) lineup of Hope/David/Suki/Keith/Will/Jill.

^^The song with William, from what I remember being posted on mazzystar.nu, was "Lay Myself Down" which was actually an unreleased song from the Among My Swan sessions. The drum sound and the general ambience of the recording seems to fit.

I don't think that Colm will be playing with them on this tour as My Bloody Valentine is currently on the road. I don't know who will replace him though. May be Jill will be back. Who knows...
